## About cystitis

Cystitis is a bladder infection. It is the most common type of urinary tract infection (UTI) and is far more common in women.

Symptoms

Needing to urinate often or urgently, stinging, pain or burning when you urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pain low in your tummy, and feeling generally unwell.

What causes it

Usually bacteria from the gut getting into the bladder through the urethra. Sex, wiping back to front, holding urine in, not drinking enough and the drop in oestrogen around menopause all raise the risk. It is not sexually transmitted.

Treatment

A 3-day nitrofurantoin course clears most uncomplicated cases, with symptoms usually easing within a day or two. Speak to a GP or call 111 if you have a fever, pain in your back or sides, blood in your urine, or you're pregnant.

## FAQs

What is cystitis?

Cystitis is an infection of the bladder and the most common type of urinary tract infection (UTI). It usually happens when bacteria from the gut get into the bladder through the urethra, and it's far more common in women because the urethra is shorter. Most cases are mild and clear quickly with treatment, but left untreated it can spread to the kidneys.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Symptoms usually come on quickly:

Common symptoms

- Needing to pee more often, or urgently
- Pain, stinging or burning when you pee
- Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling pee
- Pain low in your tummy
- Feeling tired or generally unwell

See a GP or call 111 the same day if you also have

- A high temperature or chills
- Pain in your back or sides
- Feeling or being sick
- Blood in your pee

Do I need a test before I can get treatment?

No. Cystitis is diagnosed from your symptoms, so our consultation asks about those rather than needing a test result. A home test can help if you're not sure it's cystitis, but it's optional. Our clinicians check you're suitable for treatment online; if you're pregnant, have a fever or back pain, or get cystitis often, you'll be pointed to your GP instead.

How do I take nitrofurantoin?

One 100mg modified-release capsule twice a day for 3 days, with food or a glass of milk, which helps it work and eases nausea. Finish the whole course even if you feel better after a day. Your pee may turn dark yellow or brown while you take it; this is harmless and stops when the course ends.

Are there side effects I should know about?

Mild nausea and headache are the most common; taking it with food helps. Nitrofurantoin isn't suitable if you're near your due date, have significant kidney problems or have G6PD deficiency, and our consultation checks for these. Stop taking it and get urgent help if you develop a rash, swelling, or any new breathlessness or chest tightness.

Why do I keep getting cystitis?

Some women are simply more prone to it. Common triggers are sex, not drinking enough, holding pee in, and the drop in oestrogen after menopause. Drinking plenty of water, peeing soon after sex and wiping front to back all help. If you get it twice in 6 months or three times in a year, see your GP: there are preventive options, including vaginal oestrogen after menopause.

Will my order and details stay private?

Completely. Your order arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing about the contents on the outside. Your consultation is confidential and never shared for marketing.

What if it doesn't get better?

Symptoms usually ease within a day or two of starting treatment. If you're no better 48 hours after starting, you get worse, or you develop a fever, back pain or vomiting, see a GP or call 111.

Is TribElle regulated?

Yes. TribElle is a UK-registered online pharmacy created for women, by women. All medicines are genuine, regulated treatments prescribed and dispensed by our clinical team.
